Reflections on My Journey with IFHP - Chinwe Onyema

Since joining the federation in September, my journey has been nothing short of enriching—a blend of privilege and continuous learning. Coming from a healthcare provider background, the past few months have offered me deeper insights into the complexities of global healthcare systems.

One of the most impactful experiences so far was participating in the Executive Development Programme, particularly exploring the Swiss healthcare model and Helsana’s innovative approach to service contracting and data-driven claims management. Witnessing how data can transform and optimise care pathways truly resonated with me, reinforcing the critical role that data, AI, and analytics play in shaping better patient outcomes.

Other standout moments were with Swiss Re and UNIQA in Vienna. These experiences broadened my perspective on how insurance and reinsurance companies adapt to a dynamic healthcare landscape, driven by economic pressures and shifting patient needs. Discussions on topics like metabolic health and the potential to treat ageing as a curable condition were fascinating, but also underscored the need for constant innovation and adaptability in our field.

Working with iFHP has not only rapidly expanded my knowledge but also inspired me to rethink the roles we play as healthcare professionals. It has emphasised the importance of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. Making it clear that, we must not only adapt, but lead in redefining the value of health/care.

I believe that by continuing to redefine value as the balance between cost and patient outcomes, we can create an ecosystem that prioritises meaningful impact for both patients and payers. This not only improves patient outcomes, but also better aligns incentives, creating a more sustainable and equitable healthcare system that benefits everyone.

As I reflect on my time with the team and our members thus far, I am filled with gratitude for the insights gained, the relationships formed, and the inspiration drawn from the diverse leaders I’ve had the privilege to meet. Moving forward, I am eager to leverage these learnings to contribute to IFHP’s mission of advancing health outcomes on a global scale.
