Launched in March 2025, the European Health Data Space (EHDS) is a landmark in European digital health. It enables better access to care, more effective innovation and stronger cross border cooperation. For insurers, it offers the opportunity to scale virtual first chronic care, provide portable personalised services and enter new markets with greater ease. By removing technical and legal barriers, the EHDS makes application of GDPR rights far more practical in healthcare.

While strict compliance on secondary data use will be challenging, overall, the EHDS has the potential to become a global model for health data integration and interoperability.
