Meeting Details

Choose from two live online session options:

  • Thursday 17 September 2026 | 13:30 – 16:30 UTC/GMT
  • Monday 28 September 2026 | 07:00 – 10:00 UTC/GMT

Join us for an interactive Micro-course providing a broad, inspiring introduction to the strategies health insurers can use to manage the total cost of care. It helps participants develop a shared conceptual framework and understand the range of available approaches.

The programme considers cost containment through three connected lenses:

  • the instruments insurers can use to influence costs;
  • the ways care can be organised and delivered differently
  • prevention and the wider determinants that shape demand for care.

The Micro-course is delivered in collaboration with BUNDLE, an academic expertise centre that connects research, policy and practice in healthcare purchasing, payment models and system transformation. BUNDLE supports healthcare organisations, insurers and policymakers in translating evidence into practical strategies for improving the quality, accessibility and affordability of care.

What to Expect

A fast-paced, interactive 3-hour online session combining expert presentations, practical reflection and real-world health insurance contexts. Participants will explore the breadth of cost-containment strategies.

By the end of the Micro-course, participants will have explored:

  • An insurer-focused typology of cost-containment instruments, including budgets, price measures, volume management and market-oriented approaches
  • Why cost containment requires a portfolio of choices around price, volume, incentives and market design rather than a single measure
  • How care innovation contributes to cost containment
  • How prevention and wider determinants can influence demand for care
  • Which preventive strategies may fall within an insurer’s sphere of influence and how they can support broader cost-containment goals
Who Should Attend

This course is designed for professionals working in or alongside health insurance organisations who want a clearer view of the breadth of cost containment and the choices available to insurers. No specialist technical background is required, and the session is suitable for participants from strategic, commercial, policy, operational and analytical roles.

This includes:

  • Health insurance executives, strategists and business leaders
  • Provider contracting, purchasing and network management professionals
  • Health economics, analytics, actuarial and finance teams
  • Public policy, government affairs and regulatory teams
  • Innovation, transformation, digital health and care delivery leaders
  • Healthcare purchasers, commissioners and payer organisations
  • Consultants and advisors working with insurers, providers or health systems
Learning Objectives

The workshop has the following core learning aims for iFHP members:

  • View cost containment through the lens of managing the total cost of care rather than simply cutting budgets
  • Develop a shared conceptual framework around the main and emerging cost-containment instruments available to health insurers
  • Gain insight into different types of strategies
  • Mirror their own strategies against a broader international framework
Participation & Certification

Preparation will remain light. Approximately one week before the session, participants may be asked to answer three short questions:

  • which two cost-containment strategies their organisation currently uses;
  • one example that worked well; and
  • one example that did not work or worked less well.
